overboard by working with a coach

My family and friends thought I was going overboard a bit by working with a career coach for my job search and suggested I instead read some books on the subject.  To their credit, I had done so before and it was not useful.   Then, I found out about Judi.  I had some upcoming interviews and I wanted to try working with a career coach again.

My consultation with Judi was very comprehensive and invaluable.  We discussed in-depth strategies for interviewing and she made several recommendations.   Perhaps most important, Judi advised me that they would ask certain questions based on my specific situation and then talked me through how best to answer them. Wouldn’t you know it,  I was asked all of the questions during my interview.  Instead of freezing up when they the interviewer asked them, I answered with confidence.  I honestly believe that being able to answer those difficult questions, was instrumental in getting the job.  I believe I not only found the perfect job, but I also found the perfect way to get the job!

You were able to get through the clutter and focus on the likelihood that I was not chosen for a job after an interview because I failed to show true interest in the company and position.  My heart wasn't really in it.  I just wanted a job. So instead of continuing on the same track you recommended really thinking about what I wanted in a position and only applying to those.  Many instead suggest sending out four million resumes, etc.  Instead you simplified the process by helping me to focus on what I wanted and where I would be happy.  you cut through all the things that cloud the process.

The one-on-one telephone conferences were beneficial;  I received much better focus vs. than with my previous career coach. The frequent emails w/instructions were also very beneficial because of the guidance. The most valuable parts were learning about how to extract qualitative vs quantitative results from my resume and revealing what I did and what I am excellent at doing. I didn’t like the matrix tracking though. As a detail oriented individual I found it extremely time consuming; cold call letters, translating job description laundry lists into layman terms.

The most difficult aspect of the program were the cover letters - I detest writing cover letters. But I definitely feel I got the attention I needed when I needed it. Your editing made all the difference.  As a job coach, you were strongest in defining the need, asking the right questions, acting as psychologist, and sometimes seeing what isn’t written or revealed in print. You were very good with follow-up and relating to clients circumstances. I liked that you were empathetic, sympathetic, and also tell it like it is. Sharing client successes was encouraging. Your drive and tenacity is great – don’t lose that!
