Is your resume in danger of disappearing
into that dreaded Black Hole?

If you have a bad resume, you're getting fewer interviews than you could - and should - be getting.  That means if your response rate is less than 75% - your resume isn't doing its work

I decided to revamp my resume and….after some investigation I made my choice of career coach because her experience was impressive, her web site different than the others. After an initial consultation I sent in my current resume for critiquing.  She said it had to be redone. “No problem”, I thought.  Redo it and send me the bill when you’re through.  Not so fast, this was going to take some work on my part....

Then - the final product, my resume. ....one resume, one interview, one job offer.  I know I would not have been as successful had I not had Judi's help.  She's a very experienced and knowledgeable coach.
----Bruce W., NV (consultation, resume redo, interview prep)

I've seen over half a million resumes in my career - first as a recruiter for 22 years, and now as a career coach for 4.  Even the best ones weren't that good.

I've redone professional resumes from people who were Certified Resume Writers and claimed to have seen 1,000+ resumes, but who had little understanding of how hiring authorites think, or how to sell, or the psychology that goes into a resume.

And the resume owner, having paid $350 - or more - for it,  wanted to know why they weren't getting results.

But I don't want you to send me your resume so that I can tell you all the problems in it, and then tell you why you should pay me to redo it.  I'd rather teach you how to do it.

My job search has been going well; I've been getting a lot more "hits" with the new resume.  I have an excellent lead on an opportunity with the University of Wisconsin as a Budget and Finance planner.  It's an excellent and exciting opportunity; I have a first-round phone interview on Wednesday.
---Kirk W., WI (resume redo)

I had a job offer today - exactly the kind of job I wanted.  It's much better than my other one, and 10K more a year!!!  They were really impressed with my resume!
---Ellen D., OK (retained client - I do the resume)

You're selling a product and the product is you.  Your resume is your brochure.  Lousy brochures don't sell products.

If it makes it through the software stage (most don't), your resume initially gets 3 - 5 seconds.  And it's judged visually first. If it looks too difficult to read, that's all you get.  There's a reason it's called the Black Hole.

Problem areas:  layout, spacing, lack of specific information as to - not what you did, but how well you did it, too much information, too little information, a tiny font, terrible visual balance, difficulty in differentiating one area from another, long paragraphs, too much white space, too many pieces of information broken out in too many places, no profile, no objective, objective in lieu of a profile, dates in the wrong place, use of a box template, and.....

I found the information very helpful. Your feedback created a much more reader-friendly resume, and the responses are starting to pick up.  I liked your quick response and the major overhaul of my resume and cover letter, which were badly needed.
---Dennis M.,  Flinton, PA

Most resumes have at least one problem, but the majority of them have more. Even professional resumes.  And almost every resume I've seen has bullet problems.

Additionally a resume shouldn't be just hard core improve / reduce / increase statistics.  It should tell a story - about how you've grown in your career, how motivated you are, how you make decisions, and it should show how you think.

What's the answer?  How do you get a resume  that accomplishes its purpose fully and doesn't cost and arm and a leg?

Learn to do it yourself!
The result?  You have a professionally done resume.....and you did it!   Never again will you have to pay someone else to do it.  And possibly end up wasting your money

You'll not only learn how to craft an impressive resume that brings results, you'll learn why one way of doing something works and another way of doing that same thing does not.

I wanted to express my thanks for the job you did on the resume.  I never realized I had actually done so much.  It seems so clear now.
---David G., MA

Thanks to you my resume looks great. My background is fashion and the market is tough.  But, once I have an interview set up, I will definitely have another consultation with you.

The #1 problem prevalent in 99.9% of all resumes:  bullet points that are nothing but job description.  They're boring and don't serve to differentiate you from others who have held the same title or job description.

Many professional resume writers don't know how to do that - because they're getting much of their information from you.  And you don't know the full picture.  You gave them a questionnaire or an hour on the phone, and the work with that whether it's enough or not.  Much of the time it makes no difference - they're using books rather than experience - and they don't know either.

At a Women for Hire show one year, I spent the day providing resume help.  I saw 52 resumes that day and every single one of them had bullet problems...and this is the most important part of your resume!

What are the odds on your resume being an exception?

Here are some bad bullets from actual resumes:

  • Designed Rate Creation Guidelines and updated Rate Request Form
    to improve rate creation process
  • 100% to Goal for Budgeted Shrink Performance (2007, 2008, 2009)
  • Acted as a liaison between clients and contractors for quality
control purposes by assuring residential inspectors and contractor
reports were consistent with each other.
  • Hand picked from NCC Media, to strategically plan and develop
the television sales vertical within the MediaFiche site.  Involved
developing high-level relationships within NCC’s corporate hierarchy
to get company-wide sign off on partnership.
  • Led the divestiture and sale of the company’s non-core thermoformed
    products business.
  • Partnered with senior interior designer to develop schematic furniture
and fixture layouts and determine practical arrangements for commercial
interiors.  Specified furniture, fabric, carpeting, lighting and color selections

But they look pretty good, don't they?  They aren't.
Do any of your bullets resemble one of those?

When you're done with this class, your bullets - your resume - will far outshine your competition.
And in  addition to how to write bullets with substance, you'll learn:

  • The real purpose of a resume and how to achieve it

  • All the new-fangled resume theories about what you should and shouldn't do - which ones are pointless and which ones have some merit

  • Finally settle many of those ever-debated questions.  One page - yes or no?  Three bullets max - or more? Address - yes or no?  Degree date - yes or no?  References listed - yes or no? Use logos - yes or no?  Etc, etc, etc

  • The easy and most effective way to tailor your resume to an ad (hint: it doesn't involve painfully re-creating the entire resume every time, trying painfully to match your resume to the ad, ending up with something not much different than what you had)

  •  The most effective layout, and why it's the most effective

  • How to create a profile that reflects your uniqueness rather than resorting to trite phrases such as "proven ability" and other ones that waste words and space

  • What the real purpose of a resume is - and how to achieve it

  • How to write a bullet that will really get your resume read,  noticed and put all other resume bullets to shame - and save you from the Black Hole

  • Things other resume "experts" will tell you to do - and why you shouldn't do them

  • The most common resume mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Why doing this will radically and significantly improve your interview skills - which also contributes to a company's continued interest in you, further increasing the odds of your becoming employed sooner rather than later

  • and so much more......

The process of making the resume was priceless since by coming up with answers to your questions, I became more prepared to interview and learned what i needed to sell myself.  It opened my eyes to a very different way of looking at resumes and experience.
---Anne L.

What else you'll receive in the 4-module class

  • handouts and examples of what to do and what not to do
  • the two worst resumes I have ever seen in my entire life and why they're so bad
  • the recording for each class
  • open Q & A at the end of each class (or the next day, depending on the number
    of people in the class)

Can you learn this?  Absolutely!

As the How-To Career Coach - that's my goal.

I've developed a simple series of steps and check points to show you how.  I've taught my students in Perfect Job University how to do their resumes.  I work interactively with many of my clients and teach them how to do their resumes.

Once you have the psychology and understanding of a resume and its purpose. it becomes much easier to update your resume periodically so it's always ready when you need it...without having to pay money to someone who may not know what they're doing anyway.

This class is a very small investment for what you'll be learning.  What is the financial cost to you of:

  • Sending out a bad resume, which gets you rejected even just 50% of the time?
  • Being out of work another 3 months, or 6 months, or longer because you're repeatedly rejected by companies, and time stretches on as discouragement continues to build...
  • Hiring a professional resume writer every time you need it updated, and possibly ending up with a bad product and thus having wasted your money?

Companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on product brochures because they know that a strong brochure is what sells their productBut manhy job seekers are content with awful resumes and don't do anything about it, yet wonder why they're not getting many interviews.

The difference between Judi and other career coaches is that Judi teaches you the tactics and psychology of HOW to conduct an effective job search. We all know what to do, it’s how we do it that makes all the difference. As soon as I adopted Judi’s approach – which is very different than other coaches – I started seeing results.
---Maryl W., IL (Perfect Job University student - interactive resume process;
employed before full session ended)
