There's a heady debate lately about whether cover letters are worth it. The way they're written by 99.9% of all job seekers............the cover letter is not worth it. It wastes paper. It's not read.
Do any of your cover letters have 1 or more of the following?
- It begins with: "I am responding to..." or a similar phrase
- Every paragraph begins with "I....."
- Any of your paragraphs are more than 7 lines
- You think you're modifying it to mirror the ad
- It ends with "Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you." or a similar sentence
- You write the same letter and just change the person's name, company, etc
- It takes up the whole page
- It's one paragraph
- You're following a formula to say what you did and what the outcome was and giving 3 examples of that.
- You say - anywhere in the letter - something like "I would love to work in a company like yours."
One of my Perfect Job University students didn't think she needed cover letter help. She was following the formula a coach gave on Oprah. I told her if she still felt that way after we covered letters, I'd refund that portion of her tuition. Her comment when we were working on cover letters? "I can see why you say letters like most people do are ineffective. Your way is so much stronger!" (By the way, she landed her perfect job before she was done with the class.)
There are three different types of letters we'll cover:
- ad response
- cold companies (companies that aren't actively hiring your position
- search firms
All three of them have a different construction. All three of them are easy to write once you learn how. The learning isn't easy - more than one person has told me "I HATE COVER LETTERS!" And "I can't quite wrap my head around this - it's so different but it makes so much sense!"....just before everything clicked and they said "I get it!"
What do you get when you take this course?
- Three classes - one per letter type
- Q & A with each class
- Recording for each class
- Multiple handouts for each class, each with examples to use during the week
- Back-and-forth editing until I sign off on each letter and each type (often 3 - 5 edits per letter)
- Ad analysis so you learn to dissect and ad and discern the key points of importance
- Special Report: Different types of cover letters and how to write them
- Special Report: Cover letters check list
- 20 minute, one-on-one phone chat to help you identify your direction for your cold letters list
- brief review of your resume
- Special Report on resumes which includes examples to model: 14 resume mistakes that can cost you the interview (I've seen over half million resumes in my career as a 3rd-party recruiter and career coach)
- Improved writing skills - drastically, in some cases
What will you be able to do when you finish this course?
- Analyze an ad for the key points and themes
- Write 3 different types of custom cover letters in about 5 – 10 minutes for each letter
- Write a cover letter that is actually read. Hiring authorities have commented on these cover letters saying, “I wish more people wrote a cover letter like this.”
- Conduct a successful Cold Companies campaign – over 50% of my clients find their perfect job this way
- Feel comfortable picking up the phone to learn where you are in their process and how you’ve been received
- How to conduct a conversation that yields information you need instead of worrying about what you’re saying, if it’s okay to say it, did you ask the right questions, do they still like you, did you make an idiot of yourself…etc
By the way, I have a friend who proofs my cover letters before I send them, so yesterday she reviewed the first one she’s seen since you taught me how to write them. She was absolutely blown away, “This puts every cover letter I’ve ever written or read to shame. If I got this as a hiring manager, I’d show it to every manager in the office.” To which I replied, “I don’t care if you show it to people, as long as you'd hire me!” She loved how it was so specific to the ad, etc. – all the things you told me to do! Anyway, just thought you’d enjoy the feedback—she’s a senior level marketing executive, so this was quite a compliment.
